Surviving the Trauma

Our Guest Speakers will talk about how sexual assault can lead to PTSD; symptoms on and off duty as well as providing possible treatment options and prevention.

Photo of man in camouflage petting a horse on the faceAirman First Class Samantha Gilbert is currently Active Duty status stationed at Dover AFB where she is a Mental Health Technician.  She currently supervises the deployment program at Dover AFB . She manages the Sexual Assault Prevention Response (SAPR) program and is the Enlisted lead for the Suicide Prevention Program.  Airman Gilbert served as the Enlisted liaison between the Armed Forces Mortuary Affairs Operation and the Mental Health Flight, creating the first partnership in 10 yrs for patients diagnosed with PTSD.

Technical Sergeant Rouven Sefcik has 12 years of Active Duty service and is currently stationed at Dover AFB where he is the NCOIC of the Mental Health Clinic in the 436th Medical Operation Squadron. He has been deployed 4 times. Currently, he serves as the Non-commissioned Officer in Charge of the Alcohol Drug and Abuse Prevention and Treatment Clinic and Mental Health Clinic at Dover AFB.

Captain Michael Vernale is a Clinical Psychologist whose primary duties are at the ADAPT program in the 4 36th Medical Operations Squadron. Throughout his graduate coursework he furthered his training in group and individual psychotherapy for children and adult populations, including acute-inpatient triage skills for those with severe mental illness. He has taken an active role in reworking how services are delivered and how training is completed to be in line with best practices for those he works with.

Overcoming Adversity

nicole-with-horseNicole Hyden worked with the New Castle County Police Department for 21 years where she served in the Patrol division. She was a Detective in the Crimes against Children Unit, the Professional Development Unit, and rounded out her career in the Mounted Patrol Unit. Upon her retirement she was hired by the University of Delaware Police where she worked for 3 years.
Nicole was an avid runner and competed in several half marathons. She also bred, trained, and competed horses for 35 years. She was an adventure seeker and
loved outdoor activities, most of which included horses.
On August 9, 2014, Nicole’s life would change forever. She was tragically injured during a cross country competition. As a result of the accident, Nicole’s neck was broken and she suffered a spinal cord injury. She is now a quadriplegic and is confined to a wheelchair.

Nicole spent the next five months in the hospital and has undergone a number of surgeries as well as countless hours of physical therapy. She met this challenge with courage and determination. Though many may have resigned themselves to a life of heartache and hopelessness, Nicole has maintained a positive outlook and seemingly never ending supply of tenacity.

As the holidays approach and the days get shorter, we become increasingly aware of our vulnerability. Are you doing everything that you can to stay safe this season? Carl Pace is an expert in the field of personal protection, self defense and security training. He is a retired Deputy Sheriff and certified instructor with a variety of skill sets and a love for teaching what he knows.

This six hour class will consist of group learning as well as hands on activities. You will interact with horses but all exercises will be conducted on the ground, so no riding experience is necessary.

We will be holding this workshop at the Carousel Park and Equestrian Center located at 3700 Limestone Rd. Wilmington, DE 19808.  Please dress in layers and wear closed toe shoes, as a portion of the workshop will take place in an outdoor arena. Lunch will be provided.

How to Identify, Prevent, & Report Bullying! – Thanks for all who attended!

We are pleased to offer a FREE evening workshop for youth ages 10 to 17 on how to identify, prevent, and report bullying.

Carl PaceBullying has become a national problem. We see it in our schools, playgrounds, internet, texting and any other means of communicating violence. According to ABC news, nearly 30 percent of students are either bullies or victims of bullying, with recent studies linking bullying with suicide.

Carl Pace has been teaching kids about the dangers of bullying since 2006 in our schools and local businesses. He is an expert in the field of personal protection, self defense and security training. He is a retired Deputy Sheriff and certified instructor with a variety of skill sets and a love of helping children.

The Healing with Horses team will join forces with Carl for a learning experience that your child will not forget.
